We have recently seen an increase in the number of builds we are undertaking for schools as either outdoor classrooms or as a break-time adventure play area, so we thought we’d take this opportunity to explore how outdoor play (whether at home or at school) can benefit your child’s development.
Undeniably we are living in a more sedentary society than our previous generations. The digital explosion has the potential to increase the disconnect from reality, and outdoor play is sometimes on the bottom of the list. However, outdoor play can feed a child’s imagination and benefit their development.
Many developmental tasks that children must achieve such as exploring, risk-taking, and motor development can be most effectively learned through outdoor play.
Children have many questions about the world, as parents we have all heard the constant echoing of “why” ringing in our ears. But what better way to explore the world and find answers to those questions than through outdoor play and exploration. What kind of creatures live in the soil? Why does the sun move through the day? What do worms eat? Much of what a child learns outside can be learned in a variety of other ways, but learning it outside is particularly effective—and certainly more fun! In the outside playground children can learn maths, science, ecology, gardening, vocabulary, the seasons, the various times of the day, and all about the local weather. Not only do children learn lots of basic and fundamental information about how the world works in a very effective manner, they are more likely to remember what they learned because it is concrete and personally meaningful
Children outside have the opportunities to learn about their own skills and limitations. How can I balance on this beam? Does it hurt if I jump from here? Playing outside gives children a fun environment to learn basic and advanced motor skills, balancing, jumping, skipping and ducking!
Play areas such as treehouses stimulate children’s mental agility and imagination. One day it could be a pirate ship, the next a castle and all of a sudden it’s a hobbit house. It can give children a chance to work together and play together, all buying into the same world of imagination.
Cheeky Monkey Treehouses have had the privilege of building treehouses that will be used by 100’s of children over the years, hopefully providing not only long lasting childhood memories but also a fun and safe environment to build imagination and friendship.
